When my mother kicked me out, she did so quietly – on the porch in the morning, just me and her – and I went downstairs and packed up what I wanted to keep. Callie followed me down and watched me intently, as she had never done before. I left my dresses in the closet and my Bible books on the shelf and my hair tied up neatly on the desk like a dead animal.
